Time for A Change?

Are you working in an environment that you know is no longer for you? It is plagued with a boss who micromanages and fails to recognize your accomplishments regardless of the effort and time you put in. This person may yell and scream, undermine your leadership and tell you the organization is doing you a favor by paying you the nice salary you receive.

This work environment could be affecting one or several areas of your life (health, marriage, mood). You may be thinking, I’ve been in this role or organization for so long, what skills have I acquired and what can be my exit strategy?

Here are some tips:

  • Start updating your resume

  • If you are thinking about starting a career in a new field, start making a list of transferable skills that are applicable.

  • Know what your employee contract says about your termination as far as how much time you need to submit your resignation and completion of pending projects

  • Find out what you're entitled to when you leave. For example, how long is insurance covered for you and your family.  What happens to unused leave such as vacation and/or sick days? (Am I paid out for unused leave or is it forfeited?)

  • Start removing any personal effects from your office and any personal documents you may have on the electronic devices.

  • Don’t burn any bridges you have built. Leave the organization professionally

This list is not exhaustive, but it's a good start.

I want to encourage you. You ARE destined for greatness and DO deserve better. The ill treatment you have been receiving is not for you to fix and figure out. You ARE worth more and you CAN move on. You DO have more skills than you realize, and IT IS POSSIBLE to work in a happier environment that will pay you what you deserve. You will have to decide when is the right time to depart.
